Arabic calligraphy is an authentic Islamic script and serves as
the foundation of many art forms. The Arabic language has
ancient roots extending back more than 6,000 years, beginning
with cuneiform writing. It features seven distinct scripts, each
with its own purpose.
From these scripts, other
artistic energies emerge, enabling individuals to channel their
learned techniques into various art forms, expanding their
creative horizons.
Arabic calligraphy is also
considered a spiritual remedy for many modern ailments,
particularly psychological stress and anxiety. It delves into
the soul, replacing negativity with positivity. It spreads a
spirit of optimism, strengthens resolve, and instills hope. More
than just an art form, it is also a means of healing.
Speaking
of the Elderly Through my extensive experience teaching this
segment of society, I’ve observed that Arabic calligraphy helps
alleviate hand tremors in older adults. It has a positive impact
on their mental well-being, reducing feelings of loneliness.
They challenge themselves, taking pride in executing the
intricate movements, which fosters a sense of achievement and
self-confidence.
It also helps improve coordination that may have
remained dormant for a long time due to a lack of purposeful
activity. Additionally, the practice of calligraphy absorbs
negative energy and thoughts in young people, providing them
with a sense of peace and tranquility.
Arabic words
are written from right to left, which sets them apart from most
other languages that are written from left to right. When
students engage in this new writing practice,
Through my experience teaching non-Arabs and those
unfamiliar with writing in Arabic, I’ve noticed that after
practicing Arabic handwriting, they often experience hand
fatigue and discomfort. This is due to the activation of new
muscles and neural pathways in their hands and brains. Arabic
letters are unique, featuring curves and angles not commonly
found in other writing systems, which contributes to this
physical and cognitive adjustment.
Another
valuable aspect of Arabic calligraphy is its ability to enhance
focus and strengthen fine motor skills, particularly finger
control. It also promotes critical and reflective thinking, as
well as thoughtful execution. The process of dipping a bamboo
pen into ink requires utmost precision—from loading the pen with
the right amount of ink to carefully writing on the paper.
During this stage, students must thoughtfully consider the most
aesthetically pleasing word placement and script direction.
Arabic calligraphy not only fosters cognitive thinking but also
improves decision-making speed, as students learn to balance
beauty and precision in their work.
Arabic
calligraphy teaches patience, fosters organization, and helps
cultivate inner peace.
Najm Al-Tameemi is a master calligrapher with over 35 years of
experience in the art of Arabic calligraphy. He honed his skills
by studying various scripts under a diverse group of teachers in
his home country, Iraq. Najm began showcasing his work in
galleries across the country and later established a successful
business specializing in commissioned writing and artistic
projects. In 2015, Najm immigrated to Edmonton, a city he has
come to love and appreciate, even with its cold winters! Shortly
after his arrival, he volunteered at the Nina Haggerty Centre
for the Arts. This connection led to an invitation to lecture at
the University of Alberta. Since then, he has taught at the
University of Calgary, Concordia University, several senior
centers, Islamic schools, and community art centers.
